⚡ Energy: Backyard wildlife documentary
💖 Status: Bunny hunter upgraded to deer chaser
😅 Outlook: BB may want to start stretching before breakfast
Today Miss Maizy discovered the deer that visit our property.
They like to wander in, enjoy the apple tree, nibble on whatever else looks delicious, and generally act like they pay property taxes here.
This morning started like any other morning.
I let the girls outside for our normal potty routine.
Then I heard a rustling sound over by the fifth wheel.
All of a sudden, a young buck darted out from behind it and stopped.
The puppies froze.
The deer froze.
Everybody stared at everybody.
Very dramatic.
Very National Geographic.
Very “who invited you?”
Maizy has never seen one of these magical long-legged backyard creatures before, so she carefully started creeping toward him.
Not barking.
Not charging.
Just curious.
Like, “Excuse me, sir, what exactly are you?”
And BB — because yes, we named him BB — just stood there.
Almost like he was waiting for her to come say hi.
That lasted until Maizy got about ten feet away.
Then BB finally realized, “Wait a minute. I am a deer. I should probably run.”
And off he went, gracefully bounding through the tall grass like a ballet dancer with antlers.
Right behind him?
Miss Maizy.
Our tiny five-pound bunny hunter had apparently decided to level up.
Bunny hunter yesterday.
Deer chaser today.
I was honestly afraid BB might kick her in the head as he took off, but thankfully he just leapt away into the trees and shrubbery like the woodland prince he is.
Maizy kept up with him until he disappeared into the brush and she could not really see him anymore.
Then I started calling her.
And like the good girl she is, she came back.
No barking.
No growling.
Just curiosity followed by, “Oh, we’re running? Cool, I run too.”
Gidget, on the other hand, stood on the front porch and barked the entire time.
Good job, Gidge.
Way to maintain your role as head of security.
Maizy can do field work.
Gidget can run surveillance from the porch.
Everyone has a job.
So it looks like our precious little Maizy has officially discovered deer.
BB has officially discovered Maizy.
And I have officially discovered that our five-pound rescue girl may be small, but her confidence is apparently full-sized.
