⚡ Energy: Fluffy, fresh, and emotionally attached
💖 Status: The girls got summer cuts
🥰 Outlook: Maizy was exactly what we needed
Today was puppy spa day.
The girls went in for some pampering and came out with the cutest summer cuts.
And, of course, brand new attitudes to match.
Because nothing boosts a Yorkie’s confidence like a fresh haircut.
They came strutting out like they had just finished filming a shampoo commercial.
Heads up.
Tails up.
Ears alert.
Full “yes, I know I look good” energy.

It is so funny to watch them prance around after grooming day.
They know.
Do not let anyone tell you dogs do not know when they look adorable.
They absolutely know.
Gidget looked like the established big sister she is, all polished and proud and ready to resume her duties as head of household security.

And Maizy?
Oh, Miss Maizy.
She is really coming into her own.
We have had her for four months now, and she is such a perfect match for this family.
It still amazes me how quickly she became one of us.
Like she was always supposed to be here, and we were just waiting for her to find us.

After losing Momo, I think Maizy was exactly what Gidget needed.
Gidget needed another little companion.
Another tiny shadow.
Another partner in barking, bunny hunting, porch supervising, snack inspecting, and emotional support duties.
And Maizy needed a family.
A safe place.
A sister.
A momma.
A couch.
A recliner.
A lap.
Possibly a puppy Bjorn.
Definitely a quieter food bowl.
They were meant for each other.
And little Miss Maizy was meant for me.
She has become my five-pound shadow.
If she is not following me around the house, she is sitting on my lap or lying pressed up against my leg in the recliner.
Always close.
Always watching.
Always making sure I am where I am supposed to be.
Apparently, I am her emotional support human.
Which is fair, because she is definitely mine.
There is something about the timing of her coming into our lives that still gets me.
I was coming out of one of the hardest seasons of my life.
Surgery.
Chemo.
Radiation.
Lymphedema.
Neuropathy.
Hormone blockers.
Reconstruction.
Trying to figure out how to live in this changed body.
Trying to rebuild strength.
Trying to feel like myself again.
And then here came this tiny little rescue girl with her cautious heart, her left-hand circles, her scared-of-bowls drama, her beach adventures, her deer-chasing confidence, and her need to be close.
Just what the doctor ordered.
Not officially, of course.
I do not think oncology writes prescriptions for five-pound Yorkies.
Although honestly, maybe they should.
“Take one tiny rescue dog daily. Best results when used with blankets, recliners, and unconditional love.”
Maizy has brought something soft back into my life.
Something sweet.
Something healing.
Something that makes the hard days feel a little less hard.
And Gidget has stepped into her big sister role like she has been waiting for the job opening.
The girls are a pair now.
A slightly ridiculous, freshly groomed, tiny-but-mighty pair.
And today, with their summer cuts and proud little prances, they reminded me again that healing can come in all kinds of forms.
Sometimes it looks like medicine.
Sometimes it looks like physical therapy.
Sometimes it looks like rest.
Sometimes it looks like protein drinks and two-pound dumbbells.
And sometimes it looks like two freshly groomed Yorkies walking out of the groomer like they own the place.
Gidget got a sister.
Maizy got a family.
And I got a five-pound shadow who seems to know exactly when I need her.
Puppy spa day was a success.
The girls are fresh.
The attitudes are polished.
And my heart is full.
