Father’s Day, Cancer Edition

⚡ Energy: Grateful and a little emotional
💖 Status: Honoring the dads
🥰 Outlook: Some people show love by showing up, over and over again
Today is Father’s Day, and I want to take a minute to honor all the dads out there.
The dads who show up.
The dads who work hard.
The dads who love quietly, loudly, awkwardly, fiercely, and in all the ways their families need.
The dads who fix things.
The dads who carry things.
The dads who listen.
The dads who make terrible jokes and somehow still think they are hilarious.
The dads who keep going even when life gets heavy.
And today, I especially want to honor Casey.
Because this year has not been a normal year.
Cancer showed up without an invitation, kicked the door open, and expected all of us to adjust.
And Casey did.
He stepped up in every possible way.
Driver.
Nurse.
Medication reminder.
Appointment buddy.
Hand-holder.
Bathroom escort.
Post-surgery helper.
Drain manager.
Photographer.
Emotional support husband.
Recliner assistant.
Dog wrangler.
Protector.
Cheerleader.
Reality checker.
And the person who has somehow loved me through every version of this journey.
Bald.
Scared.
Sick.
One-boobed.
Exhausted.
Nauseous.
Crying.
Sarcastic.
Spicy.
And occasionally very hard to live with.
Shocking, I know.
He has carried so much this year, and I know cancer did not only happen to me.
It happened to us.
To our family.
To our routines.
To our plans.
To our marriage.
And still, he has been there.
Not perfectly, because none of us are perfect.
But faithfully.
Consistently.
Lovingly.
Even when the road got ugly.
Even when neither of us knew what the next day would bring.
Even when all we could do was get through one more appointment, one more treatment, one more hard night, one more side effect, one more “what fresh hell is this” moment.
So today, I am grateful.
Grateful for the father he is.
Grateful for the husband he is.
Grateful that I do not have to walk this road alone.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
And happy Father’s Day to Casey.
Thank you for being everything I needed when cancer tried to take everything from me.
I love you.
