⚡ Energy: Myth-busting with minimal support garments
💖 Status: Continuing the “what does not cause breast cancer” miniseries
🧐 Outlook: Wear the bra. Don’t wear the bra. The bra is not the problem.
Today we are continuing our little miniseries on what does not cause breast cancer.
Today’s topic?
Bras.
Guess what?
Bras do not cause breast cancer.
Underwire bras do not cause breast cancer.
Padded bras do not cause breast cancer.
Unlined bras do not cause breast cancer.
Sports bras do not cause breast cancer.
Being smooshed into a sports bra like a boob burrito does not cause breast cancer.
Sleeping in a bra does not cause breast cancer.
Not sleeping in a bra does not prevent breast cancer.
Basically, your bra is innocent.
Annoying sometimes?
Yes.
Uncomfortable?
Absolutely.
Capable of stabbing you in the rib when the underwire breaks free like it is making a prison escape?
Definitely.
But causing breast cancer?
No.
This myth seems to have gained a lot of attention from a book published in 1995 called Dressed to Kill, where the authors claimed that bras could block the lymphatic system and increase breast cancer risk.
That sounds scary.
It also sounds like exactly the kind of thing the internet would grab onto, throw glitter on, and repeat for the next thirty years.
But from what I understand, that claim was based on flawed research and did not have solid control groups.
Later research, including a large 2014 study funded by the National Cancer Institute, looked at more than 1,500 postmenopausal women and found no link between bra-wearing habits and breast cancer risk.
No link.
Not how long you wore one.
Not whether it had underwire.
Not what age you started wearing bras.
Not whether your boobs had been professionally trapped by Victoria and her secrets.
The bra was not the culprit.
So what does matter?
The things we have talked about before.
Genetics matter.
Family history matters.
BRCA gene mutations matter.
Age matters.
Breast density matters.
Lifestyle factors can matter too, like alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, and smoking.
Hormones can matter.
Body weight after menopause can matter.
Regular screenings matter.
Self-checks matter.
Paying attention to changes in your body matters.
But your bra?
Not guilty.
So today’s Tina PSA is simple:
Wear what makes you comfortable.
Wear the underwire.
Skip the underwire.
Wear the sports bra.
Wear the bralette.
Sleep in a bra.
Rip it off the second you walk in the door and fling it across the room like a tiny fabric demon.
Your choice.
Your boobs.
Your comfort.
Your body.
Wearing a bra to bed is a personal preference, not a health hazard.
And not wearing one does not make you medically superior.
It just means your boobs are free-range.
Personally, after my double mastectomy, expanders, compression bras, Barbie boobs, and reconstruction saga, I have very strong feelings about not wearing a bra unless absolutely necessary.
But that is not because I think bras cause cancer.
It is because I have earned the right to let these medical chest rocks exist without additional supervision.
Cancer took enough.
It does not get to make me scared of bras too.
So let the record show:
The bra did not do it.
The underwire is not plotting against you.
The sports bra is not a cancer trap.
The bedtime bra is not a villain.
And if your bra is uncomfortable, that is a fitting problem, not an oncology diagnosis.
Wear what feels good.
Get your screenings.
Know your family history.
Ask about breast density.
Pay attention to changes.
And please stop blaming the bra.
Tiny Tina has spoken.
And she is probably still not wearing one.
