⚡ Energy: Myth-busting with a fully charged battery
💖 Status: Continuing the “what does not cause breast cancer” miniseries
🧐 Outlook: Your phone may steal your attention, but it did not cause your cancer.
Today we are continuing our little miniseries on what does not cause breast cancer.
And today’s myth is one I have definitely heard before:
Putting your phone in your bra causes breast cancer.
Nope.
No, it does not.
Your phone did not cause your breast cancer.
Your bra did not cause your breast cancer.
Your underwire did not cause your breast cancer.
Your boob pocket did not become a tiny cancer microwave.
From what I understand, major health groups like the National Cancer Institute explain that cell phones emit non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation. That means it does not have enough energy to damage DNA the way ionizing radiation can.
Cell phone signals use low-frequency radio waves.
They are not strong enough to break chemical bonds.
They are not out here rearranging your cells because you tucked your phone into your bra while you ran into the store.
Health agencies, including the CDC and FDA, have not found direct scientific proof connecting normal mobile phone use to tumor growth.
And just like we have learned with the other myths in this little series, researchers continue to point to established breast cancer risk factors instead.
Genetics.
Family history.
BRCA gene mutations.
Hormones.
Age.
Breast density.
Alcohol.
Smoking.
Lack of exercise.
Body weight after menopause.
Things with actual evidence behind them.
Not your phone hanging out near your boobs while you try to carry seventeen things without a purse.
So this is good news for the people who prefer to carry their phone, lip gloss, keys, and ID in their bra.
Please notice I did not say money.
Because nobody wants your sweaty boob money.
I said what I said.
If you are that committed to not carrying a purse, backpack, wallet, crossbody bag, fanny pack, tote bag, emotional support satchel, or whatever else the people are using these days, more power to you.
Live your life.
Free your hands.
Use the boob storage system if you must.
Just maybe leave the cash out of it.
Personally, I will be sticking with the traditional purse or crossbody bag.
First of all, I currently have medical rocks attached to my chest.
Even if I was wearing a bra, I do not think there is room in there for a phone, lip gloss, keys, ID, and my will to live.
The expanders have already claimed the available real estate.
Second, in true Tina fashion, I own a handbag collection that deserves to be used.
I did not collect purses just to shove my phone into my bra like a raccoon hiding snacks for winter.
And third, after a double mastectomy, expanders, compression bras, radiation, reconstruction planning, and the ongoing boob construction zone, I am not trying to turn my chest into a junk drawer.
The boobs have been through enough.
So here is today’s Tina PSA:
Putting your phone in your bra does not cause breast cancer.
Sleeping in a bra does not cause breast cancer.
Wearing underwire does not cause breast cancer.
Carrying your phone near your chest does not cause breast cancer.
Cancer is scary enough without giving it fictional origin stories.
Pay attention to the things that actually matter.
Know your family history.
Ask about your breast density.
Get your screenings.
Do your self-checks.
Limit alcohol if that is something you choose to do.
Move your body when you can.
Talk to your doctor about your personal risk.
And please stop blaming your phone for something science has not proven.
Your phone may drain your battery.
It may ruin your attention span.
It may make you lose three hours watching dog videos when you only opened it to check the weather.
But it did not cause your breast cancer.
And if you still insist on using your bra as a purse?
Fine.
Just don’t hand me boob money.
Tiny Tina has standards.
